The term "precision" is used because each forging is produced in the size envelope of a finished machined part. And, often at a fraction of the cost. It is the design and construction of the forging die that precision is most critical. Simpler parts can usually be forged in a conventional two-piece precision die. Here, top and bottom dies come together to form the part. Although simple, this die technique can often be employed to produce highly complex parts -parts with extremely critical tolerances on angles and wall thicknesses. With Some modifications -such as incorporating an ejector pin or knockout- the overall capabilities of the two-piece die can be further enhanced. In parts demanding extremely complex configurations -such as undercuts, deep ribs and back drafts -wrap dies are used. Such dies usually employ a top and bottom punch and multiple wraps. In operation the die wraps are held in place by a ring. The wraps can have multiple tapered or straight inserts. During forging, these inserts are placed in the bottom of the press. Hydraulic cylinders, located beneath the press, then pull the hold-down ring into place. It is the pressure from these hydraulic cylinders that keeps the die set together as the top punch comes down to form the part. This technique is especially effective in producing complex shapes in seamless configurations such as hydraulic valve bodies.
